I'm up five pounds.
The holidays. My birthday. My sister coming to visit me. A thousand and one excuses about why I "don't have time" to work out.
I always gain five pounds when my sister is here. It's the alcohol. It makes me hold water. It will likely be gone by the end of this week or next.
I'm regrouping. Posted my food yesterday. Will post it again today. I will get on the exercise wagon once and for all tomorrow morning. I did get a good four hours of exercise Saturday night. We went to see Hinder, Saving Abel, My Darkest Days and Default. Head-banging, fist-pumping and dancing will make you sweat. My shoulders are still barking at me a little bit.
Onward.

The Road to Hell
The last two weeks have been a microcosm of my entire training experience. I start feeling good about it and then it falls apart.
This last week has been one interruption after another. Because I let them happen. We had company a couple days, so I ate like a pig. The weather's been good, but I didn't feel like working out alone, so I just didn't do it. Then I caught the minor league version of the stomach bug that's been making the rounds (nausea, diarrhea, but no vomiting) and today I have a migraine. So, another week gone, I'm up a pound and I've accomplished nothing.
Bootstrap time.
Foods won't be healthy today, but I'll keep my calorie count in bounds. Tomorrow, if the headache is gone, I'll walk. Then we'll go forward from there.

Problems already
So, the very day I started this blog, I twisted my knee. Again. Not while running or walking, but while dancing.
See, I had this brilliant idea that since I hadn't walked that day that I should do something to burn some calories, so I hooked up the iPod to the stereo and started boogieing.
I felt it go, but I kept going for the full 40 minutes anyway. You should have seen me trying to get out of bed the next morning. I work with 80 year old women who move better than I did that day.
So, this week was a wash. I did lose 1.6 pounds, but didn't make any gains in the exercise department.
My knee seems to be sufficiently healed to start walking again. I have been able to work pain free for three days now, so I'm good to go.
Lesson learned? Not every workout is productive. Until I'm in better shape, I plan to stick to goal specific workouts and some gentle yoga.

It Starts
I've been hemming and hawing about whether to make a blog about this or not. But I've also been on again, off again with this goal, so I'm hoping making a blog will keep me honest and on track.
I want to run in the Volkslauf in Bakersfield, California in 2012.
What's a Volkslauf? Here's the website:
http://www.volkslauf.com/
Here's a great video of the event in 2010:

Have I lost my mind? Workin' on it. And just think, you get to watch me.
So, I'm too heavy, too slow and too weak to do this. That's why I'm giving myself 600 plus days to prepare. Plus, I turn 45 in 2012 and this seems like a good way to celebrate that milestone.
Here's a link to my food diary and stuff:

So, you get to see how I'm doing with the weight thing.
I'm going to be using the 20 level challenge on http://www.bodyweightculture.com/ to work on my strength. I'm not sure if I will join a gym in the future or not. Our old gym had an assisted pull up/dip machine so I may rejoin there when I get to that point in my training. I'm going to have to be able to do pull ups and muscle ups in order to run this race.
I'm using suggestions from Runner's World to start running. I have a 28 day, slow work up and then a six month plan to ease into running. Part of my problem with the fits and starts with this goal is that I tried running and torqued my left knee, but good. It seems to finally be fully healed, but I'm going to start out even slower and easier this time so I don't screw myself over again.
I'm not sure if I'm going to post daily or weekly on this blog, but I plan to update regularly. I'll be posting my workouts and possibly my calorie counts. I'll probably post my weekly weights, too. Plus any brilliant thoughts that cross my mind. Like why this is a good idea and why I shouldn't be admitted to the mental hospital at Fort Supply, for starters.
